Genroku-Japanese Sweets

Step into over 100 years of tradition at Genroku Mochi Honpo, a beloved sweet shop nestled in Takahama Town, Fukui Prefecture. Founded in 1924, this family-run store will marked its 101st anniversary in March 2025 — and remarkably, it has always sold just one item: Genroku Mochi.

Made fresh daily, this soft, delicate mochi is crafted from carefully kneaded rice flour and filled with smooth, subtly sweet red bean paste. The recipe traces its roots back to Hokkaido, where the founder learned wagashi techniques once used for sweets served to the Edo shogunate.

Simple yet refined, Genroku Mochi melts in your mouth and lingers in memory. It’s the kind of timeless treat that makes a visit to Takahama all the more worthwhile.
