Zen Master Soen Shaku’s birthplace
Born here in Takahama in 1859, Master Soen Shaku is a pioneer of modern Japan, and was the first Japanese monk to introduce Zen Buddhism to Europe and the United States.
Master Soen led a remarkable life, and with the help of his notable disciple Suzuki Daisetsu, his teachings have helped to spread the message of Zen to the western world.
This site marks his birthplace, and has a stone monument and epitaph in memory of his great achievements.
